As regulations on medical and recreational marijuana are increasingly relaxed all over the world, cannabis and hemp-derived products have made the jump to the salon. Clients can reap the clinically-proven benefits of CBD-infused treatments and products during their services, which can mean client loyalty, increased retail revenue, and an experience that moves beyond relaxation into actual healing. Sounds great right? But in order to make the most of this trendy ingredient, some education is required to better manage our clients’ expectations and questions as you introduce the topic of CBD treatments into your salon environment. Here’s what you need to know about CBD in the salon:
CBD is generally a derivative of industrial hemp plants
The first thing you need to know is that CBD is short for Cannabidiol, a non-psychoactive component of the hemp plant. It interacts with receptors inside the human body that make up the endo-cannabinoid system. This system exists because our bodies actually produce cannabinoids naturally. Cannabis just happens to include a very high level of naturally occurring cannabinoids and CBD interacts with our receptors very well. Think of it as fitting Legos together from different sets – they didn’t come together in the package, but they still fit perfectly.
CBD has several positive benefits
Depending on the nature of ingestion, CBD can alleviate conditions from anxiety to muscle aches. In the salon, we generally deal with topical applications. With topical products, the CBD doesn’t reach the bloodstream. Instead, it interacts with nearby cannabinoid receptors in the skin and can help with aches, spasms, relief of inflammation and pain, and can even reduce skin irritation from eczema and acne. When ingested in supplement form, or via inhalation, CBD interacts with the body differently and can positively affect conditions like nausea and diabetes.
It doesn’t get you ‘high’
Typical cannabis plants contain two main cannabinoid components; CBD and THC. Most people are familiar with the fact that cannabis can create a high when ingested, and that’s thanks to psycho-active THC. When CBD products are made, the Cannabidiol is extracted from the plant through several possible processes which does not transfer THC into the final product. Use of CBD products can trigger the receptors of the endo-cannibinoid system, but it won’t leave you feeling paranoid or jonesing for snacks. CBD IN THE SALON: WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
Not all CBD topicals are created equally
In addition to the CBD component of these products, it’s important to analyze the other ingredients for quality and efficacy. The carrier creams and oils that allow CBD to absorb into the skin quickly are key. Look for high quality, cosmetic grade ingredients like coconut or grape seed oils, which mimic the skin’s own moisture and are accepted deeply into the skin’s layers for maximum benefit. - MADE CBD Products – I’ve been using MADE topically on my injured hand and neck for the past month and I have seen measurable benefits. I’m able to work longer than without it, and I haven’t had to take pain medication as often. It’s another powerful tool in this nail tech’s arsenal when it comes to body breakdown. I love that I can apply it directly to the place where I’m in pain and allow it to work its magic.
